Social groups

It is important for everyone to be in company where they feel good and can talk about their life and feelings openly and without facing prejudice. It is also good to listen and learn from others. Numerous social and support groups operate within Samtökin ‘78. Here, everyone should be able to find the group for them.

Samtökin ‘78’s Youth group operates within the organisation and is intended for queer and questioning youth between the ages of 13 and 17. Members meet every Tuesday from 19:30 – 22:00 at Suðurgata 3. You can find more information here or on their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/unglidar78

 A queer youth group also operates in Akureyri, the capital of North Iceland. They meet Thursdays at 8 p.m. in Rósenborg Community Centre. You can find more information here

KMK – Women with women is a group for lesbians, with a dynamic programme year-round.

FAS – Parents and Relatives of Queer People. FAS enables parents and relatives of queer people to meet others in the same position, obtain information regarding education and support and improve the visibility of relatives in society.

HIN – Hinsegin Norðurland is an organisation of homosexual, bisexual and transsexual persons in Northern Iceland and is based in Akureyri. You can follow them on their facebook page

A.A. groups.The A.A. group for queer people also meets every Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tjarnargata 20 (the Yellow House). The group’s meetings are well attended by alcoholics who unite their experience, strength and hopes as queer alcoholics and seek a new lifestyle – sober. Both groups hold their meetings in Icelandic, but guests are welcome to express themselves in the language of their choice.

HLDI – Deaf Social group is an independent social group that has the dual mission of protecting the rights of and dealing with issues concerning deaf homosexuals and creating a positive space for social activities.  www.samtokin78.is

Reykjavik Pride is an independent organisation responsible for coordinating the annual Pride festivities, held the second weekend in August with a exuberant parade and outdoor fête. www.hinsegindagar.is/en/

Q – Organisation of Queer Students in Iceland. A social and interest group for students at University of Iceland and other university-level institutions in Iceland. www.hinsegin.wordpress.com

MSC Iceland is a social club for gay men into leather, rubber, uniforms and jeans; the heart of the leather scene in Iceland. www.msc.is
