Ísland er í fararbroddi í heiminum í jafnréttismálum, sérstaklega þegar kemur að löggjöf sem tryggir réttindi trans og intersex fólks. Horft er til okkar sem fyrirmyndar og það sem við gerum og segjum þegar önnur ríki brjóta á mannréttindum borgara sinna hefur þess vegna mikla vigt á alþjóðavettvangi.
Samtökin ‘78 kalla eftir því að íslensk stjórnvöld standi við eigin yfirlýsingar um stuðning við mannréttindi hinsegin fólks og fordæmi nýja tilskipun Bandaríkjaforseta, sem hreinlega afneitar tilvist trans fólks og intersex fólks. Í tilskipuninni er ráðist markvisst að bandarísku trans fólki og réttindi þeirra að engu gerð. Við köllum eftir því að utanríkisráðherra boði sendiherra Bandaríkjanna á Íslandi á sinn fund og komi sjónarmiðum Íslands skýrt á framfæri á alþjóðlegum vettvangi og í opinberum samskiptum við Bandaríkin á næstu mánuðum og árum.
Í beinu samhengi við þróun mála vestanhafs hafa Samtökin ‘78 fengið til sín holskeflu fyrirspurna frá bandarísku hinsegin fólki um það hvernig hægt sé að flytja til Íslands. Ef fram fer sem horfir gætu íslensk stjórnvöld staðið frammi fyrir því innan tíðar að þurfa að taka afstöðu til þess hvort taka eigi á móti hinsegin flóttafólki frá Bandaríkjunum. Svo alvarleg er staðan.
Utanríkisstefna Íslands hefur undanfarin ár einkennst sterklega af því að Ísland kalli eftir virðingu fyrir mannréttindum hinsegin fólks víða um heim. Sú áhersla hlýtur einnig að gilda þegar vinaþjóðir eiga í hlut. Það er skylda Íslands og ábyrgð að tala skýrt fyrir mannréttindum þegar þau eru brotin og halda á lofti þeim gildum um frelsi sem íslenskt samfélag hefur í hávegum. Vinur er sá er til vamms segir. Ísland tók nýlega sæti í mannréttindaráði Sameinuðu þjóðanna og hefur því sérstaklega gott tækifæri til þess að standa með bandarísku hinsegin fólki og varpa ljósi á mannréttindabrot bandarískra stjórnvalda, sem ekki sér fyrir endann á.
Við sendum loks samstöðu- og baráttukveðjur til systkina okkar í Bandaríkjunum. Stjórnmálaleiðtogar geta haft áhrif á líf okkar, en þeir stjórna því ekki hver við erum. Hinsegin fólk hefur alltaf verið til og verður alltaf til, óháð því hvað stjórnvöld á hverjum tíma segja.

Iceland’s responsibility: A statement from the board of Samtökin ‘78
Iceland is a world leader in equality, especially when it comes to legislation that guarantees the rights of trans and intersex people. We are regarded as a role model, and what we do and say when other states violate the human rights of their citizens is therefore of great importance on the international stage.
Samtökin ‘78 calls on the Icelandic government to uphold its own statements of support for the human rights of queer people and to condemn the new executive order of the US President, which simply denies the existence of trans and intersex people. The executive order systematically attacks American trans people and nullifies their rights on the federal level. We call on Iceland’s Minister of Foreign Affairs to invite the US Ambassador to Iceland to a meeting and to clearly present Iceland’s views on the international stage and in public relations with the United States in the coming months and years.
In direct connection with developments in the US, Samtökin ‘78 has received a flood of inquiries from queer US citizens about how to move to Iceland. The Icelandic government could soon be faced with having to decide on whether to accept LGBTI refugees from the United States. The situation is that serious.
Iceland’s foreign policy in recent years has been strongly characterized by Iceland’s call for respect for the human rights of LGBTI people around the world. This emphasis must also apply when friendly nations are involved. It is Iceland’s duty and responsibility to speak out clearly for human rights when they are violated and to uphold the values of freedom that Icelandic society holds in high regard. Iceland recently took a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council and therefore has a particularly good opportunity to stand with American LGBTI people and shed light on the human rights violations of the American government.
Finally, we send our solidarity and strength to our queer siblings in the United States. Political leaders may influence our lives, but they do not control who we are. LGBTI people have always existed and always will exist, regardless of what the government says at any given time.
